Nope, that didn't work, either. Some kinda decompiling error.
OK, trying a PuppyLinux Windows installer, since my lappy is so old it doesn't know how to boot from a USB and I don't want to jump through 16,000 hoops to get something called "grub" to work...

@kabuki Got it. Thanks for the info!
...aaaand it doesn't look like I can boot from USB! #fail
@tatterberry i hate it when sketchbooks don't fit my scanner. I limit myself because of that. >P
@varx Aaah! And when and where do I type in all these crazy commands? (I used to DOS as a kid, can do a few command-line stuff in Windows if needed, but I'm usually troubleshooting then or following directions).
That does sound nice, to have apps/libraries all figured out for you!
@varx Thanks for the heads-up on the wifi! That could be vital to the mission. :)
Are packages like .exes? I'm still learning the lingo and how the systems differ.
@linen Yeah, since this is going to me seeing if I can revive this old pup to take notes for me, I don't picture I'll be downloading a lot of software. I wouldn't mind becoming fluent in Linux and finding a cool distro, but for now...I'm just putting my toe in the water. :)
This MATE looks awful nice, though!!! I like that you can, um, rearrange panels and such so it resembles a few different OS traditions.
@linen Thanks for the alternate suggestion! I'm booting up a LiveUSB creator and giving Lubuntu a go, but if it's like, ??!?, I'll try Mate. (Someone's making this eOS Luna look good, too! https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/switched-from-windows-7-to-elementary-luna-linux/)
@RussSharek Well said!
@absor70 Thanks! I'm leaning towards Lubuntu (hardware is from 2004) but it's helpful to know that your mom was comfortable using Mint, and that it revived an old notebook! Super encouraging answer, thank you!
@icefox Yeah, this is definitely an experiment to see if I can get a bit more use out of an old lappy (and out of handwriting notes in meetings)!
@ckeen Yup, had the dust blown out not too long ago.
I know it's an old puppy...but I'd rather type notes in a meeting than handwrite them. :P
@spinach oo! You're making me lean towards Lubuntu! :) Thanks, this answer was super helpful.
@jakobpunkt STRONG feelings! XD
Whoa, I didn't know Ubuntu had an app store! @spinach said Lubuntu would be a good fit for me, since I primarily plan on taking notes and emailing them out. I'm leaning towards that one.
