facebook and myanmar rant

I guess what affects me the most about this is the casual rascist arrogance that Zuckerberg and the tech industry in general has. Foisting English-language tech on the world and not bothering to ensure that there's proper support for the actual languages spoken in other countries than the US 😠

The whole move fast and break things paradigm needs to DIAF and I especially like the slogan "Facebook is a toilet".

The NBN was down all morning. I was in the middle of a support call to my ISP (it must be a fault at your end) when they got a lot more reports. The support person then said that apparently the NBN had been "rationalising the network" and that had caused the issue.

in the afternoon I got a "courtesy text" from the ISP stating that they'd completed a network upgrade in my area and some customers may have had their connections dropped as a result. 🤔

That's me as a kid 😃

While it takes me longer now, I still devour good books in reasonable time. The Jemisin Broken Earth trilogy only took me a couple of months

I met a traveler from an icy land
Who said—"Two dry and fleshless pits of plum
Lie in the dustbin... near them, on the floor,
Half stained with purple juice a napkin lies,
Whose tears and wrinkles tell
That its user well those plums enjoyed;
And on the napkin, these words appear:
I have eaten the plums
That were in the icebox;
Look on my works, ye Hungry, and despair!
Nothing beside remains."

My copy of How to Talk to Girls at Parties (the movie) arrived today! It had to be ordered from the UK since apparently no-one in Australia is a Neil Gaiman fan 🤔

Laurie Penny with some words on why you should *not* give fascists etc. a platform. The folks at the ABC should read and reflect on their stance (I hate typos! 😩 )

This is an amazing feat - one woman riding the entire Vuelta just before the men rode each stage. Let no-one say that women aren't capable of riding grand tours.

This is an interesting article, reflecting on the controversy around the 1939 movie "Confessions Of A Nazi Spy" and pointing out modern parallels.

RT @aparrish in 1841 horace mann accurately predicted that reading turns kids goth "In regard to all the other sources of pleasure... the alphabetic column presents an utter blank. There stands in silence and death, the stiff, perpendicular row of characters, lank, stark, immovable, without form or comeliness, and, as to signification, wholly void. They are skeleton-shaped, bloodless, ghostly apparitions, and hence it is no wonder that the children look and feel so death-like, when compelled to face them."
