The “you are somebody now” is really striking in how overtly fascist the messaging is—if you want to read up on it, look up “New Man” as used by fascism.

This is Just to Say (by Cato, a tabby cat):

I have stolen
the plums
that were on
the counter

and which
you probably
would have preferred
I did not

I'm not sorry
they were so rolly
so fun
I put them
under the couch

pro tip: tell your boss the AI said you’ll be more efficient at home and see which one of their irrational beliefs wins out

Generative AI is a Faustian bargain. Every use of it weakens you. Maybe you occasionally save a few minutes, but you are diminished for it. With each use you are further from your human potential.

Very interesting statement here in a blog post about a developer adopting the EUPL. I don't disagree, but this certainly hasn't been a popular opinion in OSS circles for a bit. The vibe may well be changing. (Emphasis mine.)

Ok, genuinely, tech journalists need to investigate why so much money is being laundered into Omarchy. A bunch of slopware from a white supremacist does not deserve $18 million when real Linux projects have gone unfunded for years. There has to be something else going on here.

I don’t want a new phone. I want my perfectly good hardware to keep getting updates until it actually stops working. I want replaceable batteries that get recycled. If a company stops giving updates I want to be able to change the OS.

Every single one of these doomerism articles is a) 100% bullshit and b) is put there to make the technology seem magical when it's just matrix multiplication

"While Buckmaster and Alpöge were finalizing their own results, they learned that “information about our progress had been passed to OpenAI.” When they contacted OpenAI, they were told that OpenAI had already achieved a full proof of the central problem. But when they asked follow-up questions about when OpenAI had begun its research into the problem and how much human input was involved, the answers became more evasive.

“It emerged that an entire team had been working on the problem,” Buckmaster said, “and that an insane amount of compute had been used
. Eventually, it was agreed that [the first prompt] had been sent in the past few days, after information about our work had reached OpenAI.”

If true, that would suggest the OpenAI team had become convinced that Buckmaster and Alpöge’s approach was the right one, and decided to use its material advantage in computing resources to reach a formal proof first."

It appears that Tristan Buckmaster is raising alarms that AI corporations may have snooped on their research so the companies could throw compute at developing proofs for, and gain credit for, advancements in the Navier-Stokes equations. OpenAI then threw a massive amount of compute at the problem, and seemed to try to coerce Tristan into getting credit for it: https://cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/statement.pdf

> I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, “Why would you ruin your career?” I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was, “If you don’t want me to be nice, then I don’t have to be nice.”
