To call the SID „the best soundchip ever put in a computer“ is a BIT of a hyperbole I would say… and a matter of taste. Yamaha‘s FM chips or Roland’s LA synthesis chips might also have a right for that title… But I guess the SID has the most die hard fans!

Excerpt of a German book about Commodore. The text reads (machine translation): Why was the C64 so successful? Well, on the one hand, it was probably the then lush memory of 64 kilobytes, as well as its - compared to the competition - great graphics and sound capabilities. The sound chip "SID" is probably the best sound generator ever installed in a computer (we are not talking about today's sound cards of PCs, because they can only play samples). It has filters that enable sounds that were quite close to the professional synthesizers, which were expensive to buy at the time. Original: Warum wurde der C64 so erfolgreich? Nun, zum einen war es wohl der damals üppige Speicher von 64 Kilobyte, sowie seine - im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz - großartigen Grafik- und Soundfähig-keiten. Der Soundchip »SID« ist wohl der beste jemals in einem Computer verbaute Klangerzeuger (von den heutigen Soundkarten der PCs reden wir nicht, denn die können nur Samples abspielen). Er hat Filter, die Klänge ermöglichen, die den damals teuer zu kaufenden Profisynthesizern durchaus nahe kamen.
