I wrote a personal essay on federated social web meets the rogue archivists, the nuance and power of forgetting, and building social software around consent and archival resistance. wilkie.how/posts/social-archiv

I'm recording EaaSI demo videos, do you think the Mellon Foundation will get the joke if I go for the "12-year-old YouTuber explains how to install VirtualBox" screencast aesthetic

@ashley my gf, who in addition to fielding requests from curators and researchers and staffing public reference desk shifts, is diligently trying to *inventory* the thousands of unorganized boxes in her musem's basement without the help of any cataloging software or on-site IT support (they've been promising to "investigate" an ArchivesSpace instance for over a year, but again, "IT" is a dude who comes in once a week to run anti-virus), is constantly asked what her "digital preservation plan" is

@ashley having only become a Linux convert ~2015, I never really understood the gripes about user-friendliness and hardware and now I'm like ohhhhhhhhhhhhh

Hooray, digipres.club is back! So now I can ask a question of any QEMU tinkerers and/or legacy Linux users:

Any suggestions for getting '90s-era Mandrake (5.x) to recognize sound and network cards? As far as I can tell from modprobe, Mandrake had native drivers for QEMU's emulated SB16 and NE2000 PCI devices, and they're loaded into the kernel, but the OS still won't see them.

Am I going to finally experience the joys of recompiling the Linux kernel???

seriously considering getting a pair of compression gloves because my hands are always FREEZING in the office (also in many other places, I do have poor circulation or something, but it is particularly acute here)

does anyone else do this/have recommendations for being a cold digipres desk monkey?

@ashley I had way more fun and learned a thousand times more about CSS in messing around with that site for a couple hours than I will ever ever get from searching SO

@ashley if the joke was meant to be "haha, what if the web still looked like this", it backfired immensely because it just reminded me to go back and make this dummy site real

Does anyone have readings off the top of their head along the lines of "don't refer to computers as 'magic' because it obscures the human decisions and biases and labor that go into making technology"

I want to start picking this bone and would like to be able to point immediately to more well-thought-out arguments ;)

FB rant

Ok, finally bothered to read Zuckerberg's letter. Lord, spare me.

The word "advertising" is in here....once? I think? And YET AGAIN he's put the onus on the users (oh YOU thought we wouldn't let every half-wit "researcher" and "startup" access your one-on-one chats? whatever gave YOU that impression?)

I still see nothing in here even suggesting they'll stop selling the shadow profile I'm quite sure they've kept and gathered on me in the past two years.
