@jonne

2000: If we switch to EVs, we can build enough renewable energy to both replace fossils and power the EVs.

2010: Oh, we also need more renewables to give everyone 4K videos. That's tricky but we can do it!

2019: Right, also we need energy for these cool crypto currencies. Totally doable, lemme just double the wind mills.

2023: AI is fun! Sure, we can build new solar panels, but the replacing fossil fuels part can wait a bit. AI surely is the last power hungry tech we'll get, right?

@CppGuy I'm not arguing against this, but it's good to also bear in mind that nature and social systems which need changing to tackle climate change are nonlinear and complex. They can't be broken down and solved one problem at a time.

I believe for this reason none of your suggested actions do more than mitigate local harms.

Now tactics are always up for debate, but I have yet to see a viable route to a system change with this method and I think system theory can explain why.

Every country has their taboos and in one of the most nefarious is our obscene material footprint.

We are the baddies, but will absolutely deny it.

"Finland’s material footprint is seven times higher than the global sustainability boundary."

"Finland’s large footprints cannot be fully explained by factors such as population density, geographical latitude, or industry profile. Rather, Finland’s footprints are driven by excessive consumption of raw materials."

If you're looking for an email app for Android, give a try. It's fully open source (GPLv3), rich in features, very customizable and privacy conscious. This is the only app that can handle my slightly complex SMTP/IMAP setup.

The developer is very responsive to requests.

There's a pro version but buying it is done in a very nice way that's affordable to everyone.

If we want free software to thrive, these are the kinds of projects are what we should support.

Excellent speech by Ndongo Samba Sylla proposing unilateral decolonization and economic sovereignity by the global South governments.

The steps outlined – reducing material-technical dependency on the global North, mobilizing production and establishing industry policy for human well-being etc. – are excellent policies even it wouldn't lead to collective defaulting of odious debts.
