LA Times - The University of California says student governments are banned from boycotting all countries, including Israel. The move is a response to Trump guidance that such boycotts would disqualify universities from federal research grants. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-07-02/uc-bans-israel-boycotts-bds-student-governement-trump-pressure

When our kids were tiny, the first things we taught them were to say please and thank you, and that it wasn’t okay to hurt others. It will never not depress me that so many people don’t understand that it isn’t okay to hurt others.

The first people gassed at Auschwitz were not Jews, or even Germans. They were foreigners. They were Soviet POWs and Poles. Auschwitz was not built to be an extermination camp. The original ovens were for handling routine deaths of sick prisoners.

Don’t let the fucking fucks at ICE tell you they are different. Don’t let your neighbors tell you it’s not the same. It never starts with death camps. It starts with racial animus, dehumanization, and mass detention.

“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark” So opens the searing poem “Home” by Warsaw Shire. I refer to it often when talking about the trauma of migration. I keep thinking now about the families who fled that shark. Only to be threatened with alligators here. It breaks my heart.

Everyone in the US who voted for Donald, everyone in the US who stayed home, everyone who said "they're both the same", everyone who spent months being useful idiots for the fascist party's enthusiasm suppression agitprop by amplifying attacks and attacking Biden and then Harris -- you own this. You are responsible.

There was no higher priority in 2024 than preventing the election of a man who never wanted to govern and only wanted to rule. I fucking warned you, and so many of you blew me off.

American science to soon face its largest brain drain in history

The largest brain drain in history was when thousands of scientists left Nazi Germany; it became known as "Hitler's gift."

America's current assault on science is set to surpass that.

Elon Musk casually, and illegally, dismantled USAID. According to a new study in the Lancet, that action will lead to *14 million* premature deaths between 2025 and 2030. Again: Elon Musk is directly responsible for 14 million coming deaths. 4.5 million will be children.

Folks, if you have a Republican representative in the House, start calling them (yes, I know phone calls are hard; folks dying in concentration camps are gonna have it a lot harder) ASAP to vote against the Big Ugly Bill with talking points that don't make it clear you're not one of them.

Indivisible has some recommended ones (https://act.indivisible.org/sign/no-cutting-programs-to-fund-handouts-to-billionaires) but honestly make up any plausible bs about how it's going to affect your parents'/grandparents' medical or nursing home care or whatever. Stuff that sounds like things Republican shits care about. Fuck, you can even complain about the magnitude of expenditures and waste of your tax money.

Only four need to defect to send this back for another round.

"The Sun Belt, in short, is subject to the same antidevelopment forces as the coasts; it just took longer to trigger them. Cities in the South and Southwest have portrayed themselves as business-friendly, pro-growth metros. In reality, their land-use laws aren’t so different from those in blue-state cities."
