Spanish motorcycle rider Carles Falcon has died more than a week after crashing in the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia falling 448km into the second stage on Jan. 7 from Al Henakiyah to Al Duwadimi.

Today’s stage took in 118km of sand dunes through Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter as riders made their first tracks into the jaw-dropping landscapes towards Shubaytah.
Setting off early from the Al-Hofuf bivouac, riders were also faced with an arduous, energy zapping 527 km road section which would require some serious concentration during on the bike, before they were then thrown into the deep dunes on a hot day in the Eastern Province.
After the Dakar had only briefly visited the dunes over the past few days, the full dune programme was on the agenda today. The 118-kilometre stage took the crews into the “Empty Quarter”, where there is little more than sand.
But that was just a foretaste of the next two days. Thursday and Friday also have “dunes galore” on the program.
Another long, hard slog on the way to Al Hofuf, a city nestled in the heart of a sprawling, lush oasis dotted with three million date palms.
The terrain is a bit faster and easier to make up for the length of the special and the fact that it is the second half of a marathon stage.

A.S.O. finally presented the entire route of the Dakar 2024 through Saudi Arabia.
Previously, the teams only knew the start town of Alula, the finish town of Yanbu and the rough route.
Rally Director David Castera began with a clear statement: “This will be the toughest edition since the rally moved to the Middle East.”
The crews have to cover a total of 7,891 kilometers in January, 4,727 of which are against the clock.
