What is your favorite quote from Mao’s LRB?
One of my favorite quotes from Mao's Little Red Book is "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." This quote emphasizes the importance of military force and strength in achieving political power and serves as a reminder that politics should never be taken lightly.

Visual Learning and the Graphic Syllabus in Five Questions
I am working with a few faculty on campus who are looking to adopt a graphic syllabus. This brief posting is basically a recording of that conversation for online reference. Those who have read this blog for a while know that I have done a lot of work over the years in vis

Most of the instructional design materials on the internet are outdated or just wrong (do you want your MD using 30 yr old theories about how the body works?). Why do we want advice on instructional design or "rough drafts" from ChatGPT when its data set is hella suspect and not backed up by any research or citations?
I don't get these articles that say things like "19 ways to use ChatGPT in your classroom." Didn't we learn ANYTHING from the Web 2.0 years? That was when instructors would use anything because it was new, shiny, and free(mium) despite not protecting student data, addressing accessibility, or intellectual property issues. AI is not going to fix anything that is currently broken in education.

It is important that we understand exactly what #ChatGPT is to understand that it does not "think" or "create" and that it is an expression its creators' bias and prejudices. It is meant to create the illusion that it is an entity that "knows" what it is talking about; therefore, it appears to be only as "smart" as a your average politician or timeshare salesperson. Jill Walker-Rettberg outlines its creation well: https://jilltxt.net/right-now-chatgpt-is-multilingual-but-monocultural-but-its-learning-your-values/
@econproph @JamesGG @BenPatrickWill "Be aware" sounds like a typical flaccid outcome from ChatGPT. The demise of philosophy depts and the humanities in general means that these programmers are missing a lot of basic definitions including ethics, intelligence, knowledge vs information, art, creation, learning, etc.
@oldaily Elon Musk is a founder of OpenAI which owns ChatGPT and the reason it is polite about the Quran is the result of an alteration of the algorithm to mask what it would really regurgitate.
@Downes @veletsianos We were talking about the comment I left on his blog post here: https://www.veletsianos.com/2023/01/23/ai-chatgpt-and-instructional-design/
@veletsianos Thanks for posting that - I know how carefully you consider teaching and learning which is why I follow your blog. Unfairly, I was responding more to David's post than your analysis of it. Also, my 62nd birthday is coming up and I am practicing for my new role as eLearning Curmudgeon 🙂
