"Humans still need opportunity to learn how to make sense of those systems, and we do that by making them. Giving all the work that's most conducive to learning to a computer is selling out our futures." #AI https://jenniferplusplus.com/losing-the-imitation-game/
Exciting news! I have a short story coming out in the Sheepshead Review (University of Wisconsin's literary journal). They sent a note about the launch party: "Also..we want to invite you to share your work with the world. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing more information about our launch party on May 3rd from 1:00 - 2:00pm CST via Zoom." Here is the link to RSVP, please share as you wish: https://uwgreenbay.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bavQjQIfODPtSBg.
OER Faculty Institute: Call for Proposals
The Clover Park Technical College’s Teaching and Learning Center is excited to invite proposals for the 2023 OER Faculty Institute to be held on August 11th and 12th completely online. Our emphasis is professional and technical education, but faculty, librarians, students, instructional designers, administrators, and other #OER advocates from all disciplines are welcome.

@oldaily That is exactly what AI is good at: building relationships, healing systemic racist trauma, and creating community 😃 (oh yes, and separating teaching and learning...)
Interesting post from Matt Crosslin: "Technically, #AI has killed people – literally – before now. But right on the heels of experts claiming AI doesn’t kill people (they seem to completely ignore the fact that there are harms other than death), another person was, in fact, killed by AI." #highered #ethics https://www.edugeekjournal.com/2023/04/05/turns-out-that-ai-is-killing-people/
Despite my "hand-wringing" over AI, I am not really against #AI in general as I am in favor of critically evaluating any technology we introduce to education for #accessibility, data security, ethical issues in its production, cost, etc. #highered needs to take the lead on these kinds of evaluations and not let industry lead us around by the nose.
#AI, especially #LLM, is not an ethically neutral technology: "The consequences of algorithmic bias could mean that Black and Hispanic individuals end up paying more for insurance and experience debt collection at higher rates, among other financial repercussions, because of the #data AI uses to make decisions." #highered https://news.yahoo.com/ai-perpetuates-bias-insurance-132122338.html
When I look at #AI & see a huge step backward for #highered, I am not "hand-wringing" over plagiarism. I am talking about the loss of a lot of the in-roads we have been making in #DEI. Take what is happening in the insurance industry as an example: "As a result of the potential for discriminatory effects, the analytical processes followed by financial institutions for decision making have come under greater scrutiny by legislators, regulators, and consumer advocates..." https://tinyurl.com/ytzzpvx6
@czernie I agree - building #community here is a top priority. I know what you mean about mourning Twitter but that community is not what it once was. I miss the community I had there, but I don't miss all the toxic sludge that we had to ignore to get to that community. #highered #opened #nomoresludge #stockholmsyndrome
Yes! Lets encourage students and faculty to use this steaming pile of carp! "Upon deeper investigation, we also discovered that the same bug may have caused the unintentional visibility of payment-related information of 1.2% of the #ChatGPT Plus subscribers who were active during a specific nine-hour window." https://news.slashdot.org/story/23/03/25/0353238/openai-admits-chatgpt-leaked-some-payment-data-blames-open-source-bug?utm_source=feedly1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed
I don't miss the corporate stooges in Twitter busy figuring out how to profiteer off of open education resources (& mixing in a bit of #ChatGPT into the ethical swamp). But we have to do more than that - we have to be the good we want to see in the world. Next week we will be organizing the OER Faculty Institute & some of these sessions should be on interactivity and engagement in #OER to counter the corporate narrative that we have to have their widgetware or it is not real learning. #highered
What a great idea! - Microsoft laid off its entire #ethics and society team within the artificial intelligence organization as part of recent layoffs that affected 10,000 employees across the company, Platformer has learned. #ai #highered https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/13/23638823/microsoft-ethics-society-team-responsible-ai-layoffs
