This is literally a plot point in Vernor Vinge's novel Rainbow's End from 2006. In it, a company is digitizing the collection of a University library, and the cheapest and easiest way to do it is to literally throw the books through woodchippers, video the resulting confetti, and then let the computers reconstruct the pages via edge-matching before OCRing them.

@adr Which escooter did you buy? Very early in their emergence I bought a cheap-ish one just to tool around on, and to give my then-not-driving kiddo a way to get to slightly-further-away friend's houses. It was super fun, but finicky (especially the tires/replacing/repairing them).

I imagine a lot of that finicky-ness is solved these days?
