@Andrea
Thanks to Stil pointing me at a cheap copy of Dark Emu, I managed a couple of hours uninterrupted reading in the sun yesterday. It was very nice.

I have no words for how fucked up this is. Do the things you need to to get through it and know that we care

This is a poignant story of a potent mix of issues, hinging on how women in sport have been underpaid and undervalued, and how sporting bodies prefer medals to successful athletes who might have an off season. Rebecca was effectively dumped back on the streets with no resources to cope with transitioning out of the sport

'Rebecca Twigg was a famous Olympian cyclist. Today, she's homeless in Seattle.'

Guys: “Well you know, there were many people working on those algorithms, it’s not only Katie Bouman work but rather a team effort.”

Also guys: “Elon Musk is sending rockets on Mars, he makes electric cars, he invented tunnels, he’s such a genius, I love him.”

This is a good interview with the owner of the British UCI-level women's cycling team, Drops. I've been a big fan of the team in its various incarnations, as it worked to grow the sport without taking advantage of the athletes, and as it strove to show that women's racing was as good as the men's. I hope they overcome their current financial hurdles and have many succesful years

Two great : Computer scientist Katie Bouman and Margaret Hamilton.

Katie with her awesome stack of hard drives for image data 😍.

Margaret and her Apollo Guidance Computer source code 📚.

"Lyft cannot afford to pay its drivers a living wage, or it would “absorb enormous losses.”

This is a remarkable argument for a company to make about its own business model in a court filing. Essentially, it is describing the exact logic people have been using to warn that the other shoe will eventually drop on ride-hailing apps: it’s not a good business."

At least the encounter reminded me that I hadn't bought "Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain". I remedied that situation yesterday and now have to find time to actually read it

Voting in the state election on Saturday was fairly chill apart from the guy handing out Flux HTV cards (no-one else was hassling voters). I told him I wasn't interested and he had to know why. When I told him I didn't owe him an explanation, he got quite huffy.

Having read the Wikipedia page on Flux today, I wish I'd know that on Saturday so I could tell him I wasn't interested in a party that attempted electoral fraud in the last Federal election.

I was speaking to my mum this morning about how the kids should be running everything, and remembered Logan's Run, which I hadn't watched in years, so I popped in in the DVD player.... it's so much fun and so, so 70's.

From the wardrobe choices, the music, the choreographed fight scenes, the dome... the robot! It's all so styled and identifiably of a specific period. Maybe I should go watch Blakes 7 next while I'm in the mood :)

A photo of the completed artwork in the Newtown rail underpass. With the dodgey lighting there it's hard to get a good photo IMO

I just realised how crappy these photos are :( When the artist has finished, I'll go back and see if I can take a picture of the completed work

A while back, I saw some cool word-based artwork in the Newtown rail underpass. That got painted over and now the artist is back doing a new piece.

There was a 10 minute gap between the men and women starting in Ghent. The men had an extra loop in the middle that should have seen them out of the way when the women came through, but I think the organisers just looked at the overall average speed of the two peletons.

What I think they didn't account for is that men usually crawl along during the first part of what are usually very long courses before ramping up the speed at the end. Hopefully they will fix this next year.

The Classics cycling season started yesterday with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The men and the women were racing at the same time in the same region, and followers of the women's livefeed were treated to an early neutralisation of the race as the men were too slow.

The women knew they were in a race while the men obviously thought it was a club ride :( Coincidentally, over on Twitter, a comedy account was asking if men's cycle racing is a real thing. I think that's a serious question :)

That's not to say that I disregard any sense of community and a smattering of permanence. To extend the river metaphor, I'm looking at roughly the same stretch of water all the time, with regular neighbours who share the river. It's nice to enjoy the river in company. I just need to remember that it's just a river and I don't own it 😀
