Sometimes hard to believe this is southern Spain and within sight of the African continent. Here is the Refugio Elorietta, just a shelter, perched on a ridge at 3170m altitude in the Sierra Nevada. Can't wait for it to open again now that work is nearly complete. A valuable resource for winter mountaineers.
Sat on the summit of Morrón de Enmedio 1080 metres eating our sandwiches and looking at the stunning Sierra Nevada rising above Granada. Stunning views, no wind, warm air (even the volcanic vent variety!) meant lightweight gear. A celebratory drop of anise at the top (traditional evidently) topped off a super day. Hard to believe that we are in the depths of winter.

Ran a short rope protection and security course for some hill walking and scrambling friends of mine today. Included improvised harnesses, Italian hitch, clove hitch, assisted hoist, anchors, rappelling, classic belay, belays, prusicks, basic rescue and more. Hopefully everyone came away more confident about having to deal with an emergency situation. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and laughs in the strong winds.

Here's a strange image from today's hike in the Sierra Elvira. No filters, no manipulation, nada! Shows a temperature inversion with the city of Granada appearing out of the gloom in the lower half of the image.
Above the inversion layer the Sierra Nevada mountains rise 3000 metres above the city and are in clear haze free air.
The 3 main summits of (L to R) Alcazaba, Mulhacén & Veleta are prominent.

After a bit of a grey and dismal long weekend in the UK, today it was nice to head up above home on 4WD tracks and get the clearest view of the African continent we've had this year. Morocco did indeed seem very close, although in reality is some 220km away in a direct line across the Mediterranean.

Fantastic half-day hike up the isolated peak of Gilillo in the stunning Parque Natural de la Sierra de Cazorla.
Begins with gentle ascent through beautiful forests before breaking out onto the open hillside. Trail leads up to the Puerto Gilillo pass and onto a summit that is far more dramatic than we expected.
The summit itself is sharp and rocky, and because the peak stands so alone, the 360-degree views of the endless sierras are absolutely breathtaking.
High mountains one day, river valleys the next. Two very different days for our latest group.

Another hot day so we settled for an early start and a short hike to the magnificent viewpoint of Coros (1305m) in the Sierra de Grazalama mountains via Puerto de las Palomas. Great scenery 360° views. Must come back in the winter.
Loads of vultures overhead probably looking at us as a prospective next meal 😆. Think @khusky may have some incredible images in due course.

Started with a 6pm bus uplift to los Posiciones del Veleta. Hiked to Col de Carihuela and hence to our dinner/sunset viewpoint on top of Loma Pua at just over 3200m. Amazing location with views in all directions
