#AI work: Will AI take most of the existing #jobs from humans? Check out this #debate from the Ingenuity Labs 2022 #Robotics & AI Symposium featuring debaters Dr. Parinaz Sobhani (Georgian), Dr. Sedef Akinli Kocak (Vector Institute), Dr. Ceren Kolsarici (Smith School of Business and Ingenuity Labs), and Dr. Christian Muise @cjmuise (Queen’s School of Computing and Ingenuity Labs). https://youtu.be/JQ5s696LtNk
A #future of #cyborgs: Would you trade your biological parts for bionic ones? Check out the #robotics debate from this year's Ingenuity Labs Robotics & AI Symposium, featuring Audrey Sedal (McGill University), Lane Desborough (Nudge BG), Matthew Robertson (Ingenuity Labs), and Tracy Trothen (Ingenuity Labs). https://youtu.be/te-JKDVJlXU
Videos from the Ingenuity Labs Robotics & AI Symposium 2022 are now up on our webpage. Check out the keynote talk by Clearpath Robotics CTO Ryan Gariepy, the #robotics #debate and the #AI #debate. Like our first symposium, this one was hosted again by the amazing Amber Mac! https://ingenuitylabs.queensu.ca/rais2022/
This week we say farewell to our long-time colleague Dr. Heshan Fernando (https://www.linkedin.com/in/heshanfernando) who is moving on to a new position at FP Innovations in Montreal, QC. Heshan has been a mentor and friend to many of us at Queen's Engineering—and he will be sorely missed! Yet, I have a strong feeling that our paths will cross again ... All the best Heshan!
This piece made me smile as I ponder the new year ahead. If you haven’t watched Ted Lasso, maybe check it out—if not for the comedy, for the #leadership lesson. https://insight.ieeeusa.org/articles/what-can-we-learn-about-leadership-from-ted-lasso/
The Year in #research at Queen's U is out. Fun to see my students and colleagues at the Ingenuity Labs Research Institute showcased with our #primeminister in the leading image! It's been quite a year ... :ms_robot: 😅 https://www.queensu.ca/gazette/stories/2022-year-research
Nice story this morning in the Queen's Gazette featuring the work of Ingenuity Labs researchers about a #collaboration with the City of Kingston on the monitoring of the new Waaban Crossing #bridge in #Kingston, #Canada. Nice #mechatronics application in #civil #engineering. https://www.queensu.ca/gazette/stories/keeping-watch-new-crossing
Here in #canada, today is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on #Violence Against #Women (https://women-gender-equality.canada.ca/en/commemorations-celebrations/16-days/national-day-remembrance.html). Please take a moment to #remember the hatred-driven murder of 14 young women #engineers at Polytechnique Montréal (December 6, 1989). Or better yet—attend a ceremony somewhere near you. And even better yet—take action and speak up against harmful behaviours.
In addition to our junior faculty position in #robotics, Queen's Engineering also has an open position for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Applied Artificial Intelligence. This is a #tenured #faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in software and/or computer engineering with specialization in applied #AI for intelligent systems. See our ad at https://www.ece.queensu.ca/about-us/CRC-Tier-1-ECE-QueensU-2022-23-1.pdf.
We are hiring at Queen's Engineering! We have an open tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with specialization in a field related to #robotics and/or #mechatronics #engineering, including—but not limited to—#autonomous systems, #machinelearning & #AI for robotics, intelligent systems engineering, #HRI, #marine robotics, robotic #perception & actuation or #VR / #Ar. See our ad at https://www.ece.queensu.ca/about-us/IBENG212201_ECE_MRE_Sept-2022.pdf.
Had a chance to speak to the third-year class of Engineering Science Robotics (ESC 301) students at the University of Toronto last night about #mining and #construction #robotics, #entrepreneurship, #intellectualproperty, and on commercialization of research. Lots of great questions from a keen bunch of future roboticists—like, as an #academic, what's your strategy for ensuring great R&D doesn't die in the lab? Thanks again to Prof. Jon Kelly (https://twitter.com/domo_mr_roboto) for the invite to speak!
#Introduction time! 👋 I am an #engineering #professor at Queen's University in Kingston, #Canada. My expertise is in field and mobile #robotics. I have a newish interest in applications of #machinelearning to #control and #navigation problems. Previously worked as an #engineer at #space #robotics firm MDA. Also currently serve as Director at the Ingenuity Labs Research Institute. My #math #teacher wife and I have three #kids and we enjoy #golf.
