Climate change is a problem the world chose to have because nuclear power was 'scary'.

The worst kind of tech hype is when something is portrayed as inevitable and unstoppable, with criticism or doubt blithely dismissed as "they don't get it".

Just because a giant tech company pours vast amounts of money down a toilet, that doesn't mean the toilet is going to start spewing gold coins into the air.

Just came across an absolute gem of a paper! Here the authors show that albatrosses adjust their flight pattern on 3 distinct spatial scales:

"At a small scale (ca. 100 m) they use a zigzag movement as they continuously adjust for optimal use of wind; at a medium scale (1–10 km), the movement shows changes in tortuosity consistent with food-searching behaviour; and at a large scale (greater than 10 km) the movement corresponds to commuting between patches and is probably influenced by large-scale weather systems". https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1691358/

What is so incredibly cool about it is that they actually identify that the behaviour is organised, and can be described on multiple scales simultaneously - but then they ALSO identify the scales and have plausible explanations for the behavioural observations!

I'm super interested in bringing this kind of analysis to the temporal domain - in a time where a reaching movement and migration both just fall under "behaviour", it would be incredible to have an objective way to identify behaviourally relevant timescales.

They use fractal analysis to find the relevant scales. Does any math-proficient folks know if this is this the preferred way to do this kind of thing? And might anyone know how of any resources on it?

Are there any #privacy-respecting #3Dscanning apps that work on #Android or #Linux? I just wanted to #3Dprinting a custom opener for a wristwatch battery compartment, can't find a STL, and measuring and modeling is a bit much for a one-off I'd need ~now.

Re-toots and "this is (one of) my hyperfocus area" brain cannon appreciated.

Mozilla's Original Sin.

Some will tell you that Mozilla's worst decision was to accept funding from Google, and that may have been the first domino, but I hold that implementing DRM is what doomed them, as it led to their culture of capitulation. It demonstrated that their decisions were the decisions of a *company shipping products*, not those of a non-profit devoted to preserving the open web.

Those are different things and are very much in conflict. [...]

"Most of the technology involved in the web, like the hypertext, like the Internet, multifont text objects, had all been designed already. I just had to put them together. It was a step of generalising, going to a higher level of abstraction, thinking about all the documentation systems out there as being possibly part of a larger imaginary documentation system."
